Disability Discrimination Act 1995
This UK Parliamentary Act of 1995 makes it unlawful to discriminate against people in respect of their disabilities in relation to employment, the provision of goods and services. education and transport. It is a Civil Rights Law.
The British Government also set up the Disability Rights Commission to provide support for the act.
It is still acceptable for employees to have reasonable medical criteria for employment, and to expect adequate performance from all employees once any reasonable adjustments have been made.
The core concepts in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 are preventing:-
> Less favourable treatment for a reason related to a disabled person's disability
> Failure to make a reasonable adjustment
The effects of this act, as well as possible consequences, can be far reaching for some employers as well as employees.
It is therefore vital that all reasonable steps are taken to comply with the legislation and requirements.
